Studio Butterfly | 2006-2013
“Studio Butterfly” (Butterfly Studio) occurred during approximately a year and a half within a small office in a commercial building in downtown Salvador. It was originally thought as a meeting point for transvestites. The elements employed in the construction of the space is based on visual memory the artist kept of the rooms of transvestites that circulated in Rosana’s shelter — the first transvestite the artist met who allowed her into her world. At Studio Butterfly, the transvestites would bring old and new photographs — of family members, loved one and friends — and seated on the divan, would recount some life stories that Virginia de Medeiros would capture on film. In exchange, the artist would present them with a photoshoot and a “book” in the end.
